Mercy Corps Mongolia signs Memorandum of Understanding with National Agency of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring

On February 5, Mercy Corps Mongolia and the National Agency of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring (NAMEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding which enables both parties to work together to integrate NAMEM data on weather and pasture conditions into Mercy Corps’ Advanced Weather Information System (AWI system). Since 2016, AWI, a messaging service that connects rural communities with life-saving information on weather and pasture conditions, has relied on weather data sourced from, an open source real-time weather information.

Under this agreement, NAMEM will work together with Mercy Corps to develop bagh level (smallest administrative unit) weather forecast and disseminate that data to herders, veterinarians, and emergency personnel across Mongolia through AWI system.

Currently, Mercy Corps is preparing to test and adopt new information features like snow depth and drought information to users in 17 districts and 209 provinces. In the long term, users will have universal access to locally validated information of NAMEM and will ensure stable data source for AWI for years into the future.
