Mercy Corps Discusses the Future of the Livestock Sector with New Deputy Prime Minister

On November 2, 2017, Mercy Corps Mongolia Country Director Ramesh Singh, Director of Programs G, Enkhtsetseg and Project Manager B. Enkhtuya met with the new Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia U. Enkhtuvshin. The purpose of their meeting was to introduce the Leveraging Tradition and Science in Disaster Risk Reduction (LTS2) project to the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister. LTS2 is an OFDA/USAID funded project that supports rural herders in 128 soums (districts) in 15 aimags (provinces) of Mongolia with access to real-time weather information and pasture information via an on-demand SMS platform to help them make life-saving decisions in the face of impending natural disaster.

The meeting was also an opportunity to introduce Mercy Corps' Resilient Communities Program, which is set out to assist the 8 target provinces with livestock market system development, focusing on fodder production, breeding, animal health and meat value chain development. The Deputy Prime Minister pledged his support for Mercy Corps programming and noted during the meeting that as per the directive of the Chairperson of the National Emergency Commission, the government is planning to develop a national program on improving livestock health and prevention of communicable diseases . He added that Mercy Corps’ Programs are well positioned to align and coordinate the efforts for effective implementation.
