Mercy Corps Mongolia Advocates with Government Stakeholders to Revitalize a Stalling Livestock Sector

On Wednesday, May 30, 2017, Mercy Corps Country Director Ramesh Singh and Director of Programs, G. Enkhtsetseg, met with J. Bat-Erdene, a ranking member of the parliamentary standing committee on Environment, Food and Agriculture and a champion of economic resilience of communities through livestock development in Mongolia.

Together, they discussed two important pieces of legislation—the Law on Animal Health and the Rangeland Protection Law. Although neither bill has left the floor in decades, Mercy Corps hopes to help rally enough parliamentary support to build the legislative framework necessary to revitalize Mongolia’s livestock sector.

It will take time, however, to build the political capital necessary to push both pieces through the parliament. Complementing Mercy Corps for its contributions to the development of Mongolia, MP J. Bat-Erdene, reiterated that once the Animal Health Law passes, the Rangeland Protection Law piece is the next in his agenda—for the growth of the economy and resilience of communities.
